Twisted Cord 04:47
Twisted Cord Never been here, but so much of this feels known All the patterns, I've seen them before with eyes closed I only watched them for a minute Came home, and a year had gone Did you suffer, the same as we did When you saw the twisted cord Hovering over a difficult vision below Dive into chaos or climb ever higher alone When I'm wearing my mystical cloaking device I love the freedom, but I'm still alone, excised 'Cause when I write words, no one reads them When I talk, no one replies Checked the mirror for my reflection Still there, wondered if I'd died Still there, wondered if I'd died Hovering over a difficult vision below Dive into chaos or climb ever higher alone Hovering over a difficult vision below Dive into chaos or climb ever higher alone Feels like I'm dissolving but the world is taking shape The picture says I'm wounded, but I'm dancing in a fevered state Feels like I'm dissolving but the vision's getting clear The painting shows my wounds, but I rise with every spear Feels like I'm dissolving and the light is pouring in The painting shows I'm wounded but I've only shed my skin Feels like I'm dissolving and the dissonant takes shape The picture says I'm wounded, but I'm dancing in a fevered state Feels like I'm dissolving but the vision's getting clear The painting shows my wounds, but I rise with every spear Feels like I'm dissolving and the light is pouring in The painting shows I'm wounded but I've only shed my skin Damien Mahoney

Synching You've got the sinking feeling again And you don't know where to begin You can't turn, turn to a friend Turn your eyes around and look within Turn your eyes around and look within Turn your eyes around and look within Turn your eyes around and look within The fear that you're really alone Turns into your greatest strength In dreams where I have control I'm floating up in the air What's gonna be your dummy next? What's gonna be your dummy next? When you're reaching out for something Cos it's hard to stay with the pain We've learned to look the other way Turn down the noise, let silence in Turn down the noise let silence in Turn down your noise and let's begin Well turn your noise down and let's begin The fear that you're really alone Turns into your greatest strength In dreams where I've got control I'm floating up in the air What's gonna be your dummy next? What's gonna be your dummy next? Damien Mahoney What's gonna be your dummy next? What's gonna be your dummy next?

about

Following the slower, more spacious & meditative sound of the 2021 single, Burst Through The Borders, Twisted Cord sees Caulbearers back with their signature dark funk grooves & bitter-sweet, multi-layered laments.
With pulsating guitar hooks and distorted drum breaks, the song explores different tonalities usually associated with Flamenco, Arabic music & Indian ragas. enhanced by renowned violinist Olivia Moore (Jason Singh, Stuart McCallum, Suns of Arqa), known for her work fusing jazz with Indian classical music.
Other acclaimed Manchester musicians also guesting on the track include pianist John Ellis (The Cinematic Orchestra, John Squire (Stone Roses), Corinne Bailey Rae, Tom Jones, Lily Allen, James Yorkston, DJ Vadim) and bassist Alex Berry (The Earlies, King Creosote, Daniel Johnston, Thea Gilmore, Micah P Hinson).
Core members Anton Hunter on guitar (Beats and Pieces Big Band, Article XI), and Stefan Skrimshire on cello are joined by Phil Bennett on the drums.
Ethereal folk artist, Ruth Blake joins Damien Mahoney on vocals in her ongoing collaboration with the band.

Twisted Cord’s lyrics explore how intense events in our lives can act like initiations by shaking up, radically changing and enriching our perspectives.
Sometimes we need to break down or be broken apart into pieces, in order to come back together stronger and with more understanding.
The healing of our wounds over time can transform into wisdom, bringing more colour, depth and detail to the tapestry of our lives.

The song also celebrates the concept of Animism - the belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence.
The term can be viewed as a foundational thread for the varied belief systems of many indigenous peoples who deeply understand the importance of ritual, ceremony, initiation and connection to nature that the majority of us in the west have forgotten.

B-side, Synching (Bubbling Spring Remix) -
The original version of this track was released on Caulbearers’ ‘More Lie Deep’ EP back in 2011, but this remix was created at Airtight Studios in late 2021 with additional production and programming by Seadna McPhail. The song features Rob Turner (GoGo Penguin) on drums and Julie E Gordon (Happy Mondays) on backing vocals alongside Damien Mahoney.
The Bubbling Spring Remix of B-side 'Synching' is a fast-tempo yet spacious & dreamy anthem, led by layers of synths and strings.
The lyrics describe some of the profound experiences and teachings that singer Damien Mahoney received during intense Vipassana meditation retreats many years ago. He credited the process with helping to lift long-term depression and giving the practitioner simple yet priceless resources to transform the experience of self.
